4.2 Source rock maturities

The most important controls on the modelled source rock maturity levels are the thermal field through time and the kinetic scheme for the source rocks. More details on the input parameters can be found in the Source rocks chapter. The workflow for maturity modelling is also described in a training video.

The results from the maturity modelling can be found under Results/Maturities in the project workspace. Important results include the modelled transformation ratios for oil and gas (Oil.transformed, Gas.transformed) and Maturity windows. Results for four alternative vitrinite reflectance models are available: EasyRo  (Sweeney & Burnham, 1990),  EasyRo%DL  (Burnham, 2018), IKU Vitrinite (Ritter, 1996) and Basin%Ro (Nielsen, 2015).  The vitrinite scheme used in the modelling can be changed in the Project Settings Editor. To view the results for alternative Vitrinite models, select from the drop-down list in the Project Workspace properties window.

The onset times and duration of the oil and gas windows can also be viewed (See Figure 4.7). The model sensitivities with respect to choice of kinetic scheme can be investigated by viewing transformations with alternative kinetic schemes in the Maturities/Tr alternatives folder.
