4.5 HC migration

One of the most important results from MigriX are the hydrocarbon flowrate maps (Results/Flow/HC.flowrates). These maps (Figure 4.9) show both the rates (darker colour means more intense flow) and dominant phases. The trapped phases in accumulations are also overlaid on the flow maps. During migration simulations, the HC.flowrates property is normally plotted automatically after the completion of each time-step.

Figure 4.9: Hydrocarbon flowrate map with oil, gas and mixed phase migration with oil and gas accumulations included. Flow-rates use a logarithmic scale, with darker colours meaning larger quantities of oil and/or gas is migrating through that node (element).

The HC.flowrates property shows only the lateral flow component. We plan to add more functionality for viewing vertical flow through shales later, but for now the Results/Flow/Flowpaths/FlowDirection plot can be used to show the direction of flow. The FlowDirection plot can be plotted both on maps, wells and on profiles.

A number of plots related to the hydrocarbon columns in traps are available in the Results/Traps folder in the Project Workspace. These results are discussed further in the Traps results chapter.

It is also possible to create Streams, which show individual migration flowpaths. The streams can be colour-coded for a model property and animated using the Stream animation options.
